Brit Lit: Pride and Prejudice

The girls are watching and reading Pride and Prejudice.  Lacie is working with Anna and Angel for this book.  We are doing Lacie’s assignments for Pride and Prejudice.  We’ll be adding several fun activities.  Below is our first assignment.  Note the quotes.  This is from Kolbe’s syllabus.
"Write a letter in the style of Mr. Collins to Elizabeth and Darcy congratulating them on their wedding.  Time the missive so that it is clear that Mr. Collins is writing the letter after sufficient time has elapsed for Lady Catherine de Bourgh to reconcile herself to the marriage.  Include an uplifting and unctuous quotation if you know of one suitable.  Let Richard Harp's insight that 'The amiability of the novel, then, is that its great comic characters are allowed always to be themselves' guide your writing.  Include witty asides offered by Elizabeth as she reads and Darcy as he listens.  Mr. Collins' letters can be found in Vol.1, Chapter XII (Letter of Introduction); Vol.III, Chapter VI (Condolence on Lydia's disgrace); Vol.III Chapter XV (Conversation between Mr. Bennett and Elizabeth during which he reads Collins' letter advising Elizabeth not to marry Darcy.)"

Lacie Jan 28-30

Lacie worked on Chapt 5 of History.  She completed the study guide questions and is working on the quizzes.  I hope to test her tomorrow.  Lacie completed the Theology paper, Jesus quotes Psalms in the Gospels.  After lunch, I edited her paper she finished over the weekend.  She is in the midst of making corrections now.  My goal is to finish History and work on the second part of Lesson 2 in Latin this afternoon.  Tomorrow, we’ll take the History test, do Algebra, and start on Pride and Prejudice.  She has read to Chapter 6.  We need to complete the study guide and final exam for Oliver Twist.  We are increasing the pace in History.

Lacie revised her Psalms essay and did citations using MLA.  She worked on Chapter 5 in History and asked me to prepare a lesson on Roman numerals.  I looked at the Composition and Grammar part of the Midterm.  After lunch is the Midterm, Latin, Roman Numerals, and Algebra.  Lacie is going to work on Oliver Twist and Fr Laux study guide questions at home over the weekend.  It looks like Thursday she will take the History and Algebra tests.  She has a formal lab report with citations for the Stoichiometry lab.

MLA: Quote annotations in the Bible

Lacie is finishing a paper about Jesus quoting the Psalms in the Bible.  How do you cite the footnotes with explanations from the Bible?  Pitts Theology suggests treating the notes as articles from an ‘edited volume’.  As a Catholic, we use The New American Bible, the one read at Mass.  We use the Didache Bible, too.  The Didache Bible has more details about the sources for the notes in the footnotes.  For example, in one note for Psalm 118, the author quotes St. John Paul II or the Catechism.  The Didache Bible has a chief editor.  This citation is straightforward.

We may use Purdue’s Bible citation for both The New American Bible and the Didache Bible and call it a day.  Frankly, I tend to overthink these questions.  Lacie isn’t submitting her paper for publication.

I researched who did the most recent revisions for The New American Bible and the list of editors and collaborators is long.  It looks as though a large committee worked on the footnotes.  My plan is to cite the Bishops’ Committee of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine as part of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Lacie Files Jan14-16 Update

Lacie wrote a Psalms paper and did Latin declensions for homework.  After Chemistry class, she did Chem homework, Algebra tests, and history notes.  We watched  Pride and Prejudice. Usually, we read before we watch the movie.  I want Lacie to have a picture of the key characters before she reads the book.  I’m asking her to use an e-reader to look up all the words; there are easily 100 words which are unfamiliar.

We had a good discussion about her Psalms essay.  Math is going slowly.

Lacie: Update Week 1/21-23

Lacie is making steady progress in Chemistry.  No small feat; the class is in the midst of the toughest material, Stoichiometry.  She finished Test 9 and Lesson 33 in Algebra.  Our progress is slow; Lacie needs to do several exercises, take a practice test, make corrections, and finally take another version of the test.  Usually, she needs to make a few corrections of the final test, too.

Lacie did a rough draft of her Theology paper about Jesus quoting Psalms.  She left it at home and is going to type up the paper over the weekend.  I told her to use spell check and grammar to correct as much as possible before submission.  Yesterday, Lacie had Chem, her Alg test, and studied for the History midterm.  This morning, she studied for about 1 1/2 hours and took her History test, earning a 77%.  This morning she is working through Lesson 2 in Latin.  I want her to complete Exercises 11-14 today.  After lunch, Lacie is going to do Theology, Week 10, work in Laux, study guide questions, and notes about the Psalms.  She completed these exercises.

Today, I want her to do a chapter of History, Chapt.5.  Tomorrow after Chem, she is doing more Alg and Latin--the second half of Lesson 2, second declension neuter nouns.  How far did we get?  Lacie completed her Chem homework, two thirds of Chapt.5 in History, and some of the exercises in Lesson 34 in Algebra.  We decided to plow ahead in History and finish Chem while I can help.

Over the weekend, I want Lacie to type her Theology paper and work on the Oliver Twist study guide.  She is also reading Pride and Prejudice.  If we can pick up the pace, we may be able to complete the semester exams in Theology and History and the Final in Oliver Twist by the end of February.

We are at the point where we can start to make strides in the Humanity classes.  I think we can do a chapter a week now.  Kolbe recommends doing half a Lesson each week in Latin.  That is manageable.  We are already on track in Theology and Literature.  Lacie is performing well in ?Chemistry.  Algebra is still a struggle.  I am not introducing vocabulary or grammar for another month.

Brit Lit: Writing a Paper

Update: We are still editing.

Anna and Angel submitted papers about Why Study Shakespeare.  After reading their essays, I decided to do a writing lesson, with a focus on introductions, conclusions, and editing.  Lacie, my home-school student, uses Writing Better Essays in 20 Minutes per Day.  I used WBE to review introductions, conclusions, and editing.  We spent class discussing and editing.  Both the girls can write a solid thesis and supports.  Like most people, they struggle with good conclusions.  In reality, the introductions and conclusions are mirrors.  We talked about using quotes and questions for both introductions and conclusions.  We used the tips for editing; the girls are editing their papers for next week.

This approach to education is largely prescriptive.  I'm using the Brit Lit book as an outline for the course and for a reading list.  But, another kid had raised the question, 'Why should anyone have to study Shakespeare?'  I thought it made a good essay topic.  After I read the essays, I thought some work was in order.  The truth is nearly every essay could use some work.  I'm mindful the girls are going to college in a year or two.  I want them to be able to write a good essay.  I came away feeling today's lesson was useful.

Brit Lit: Shakespeare

We are back to work!  Anna and Angel finished and remitted Shakespeare papers.  They are completing character studies for Romeo and Juliet—which they have both read.  They are also working through who is responsible for the tragedy.  I am using several resources: Film Critics Hulk Five-act structure overview, Character Charts (key roles and responsibility for tragic suicide), and Shmoop’s questions.  Wait!  Before you judge me, look at the questions!  They are terrific!

Tomorrow, we are working on how to edit essay with WBE to hone our essays.  We are taking one of the recent essays and examining ways to improve the introduction and conclusion.  Then, we are working on editing.  Fun, right?

Are you worried about forgetting a class?

When I was in college, I stacked my education classes.  One semester I took 21 credits.  I still have nightmares that I am forgetting a class.  Kolbe gave me a syllabus.  I do use the syllabus.  I have been teaching forever.  Lacie did some diagnostics and has gaps in grammar and composition.  Like your children, Lacie is unique.  We need a program we can sustain.  So I postponed Latin and Grammar.  We have invested many hours learning how to craft and edit essays.  We are in good shape for History, Theology, and Chemistry—my Co-op class.  Algebra is slow.  My husband and I have Lacie rework problems until they are correct.  When we do Latin, we do an entire chapter—not bits and pieces.

The reason I worry about omitting a class is because I deviated from the script—the syllabus.  I am supposed to teach in small, daily increments.  But, Lacie stays with us three days each week.  Instead, I prioritize work and  assign readings for home.  I like ‘batch’ work.  It does not make sense to me to divide a book, such as Oliver Twist, into chapters to study.  Instead, she and I read the whole book.  Now that we have an idea about the plot, we can start doing some analysis or literary criticism.  Actually, we’ll work through all of the study guide questions and then work through all of the essays. Yes, we will do some discussion.

What am I forgetting?  We have neglected Guitar.  Like PE, I am less concerned about Guitar than Latin or Algebra.  Now that we blitzed through half of WBE, I can decide how to approach Vocabulary.  I think, Vocabulary will be weekly lessons and tests.  We will integrate WBE with Theology, History, and Literature essays.  We will use specific WBE exercises to craft introductions, conclusions, and drafts.  I’m recording WBE applications separately in Google Classroom.  Once, we get a handle on Vocabulary, I’ll work on Grammar and MLA.  I am already integrating MLA into citations.  We’ll do more.  Finally, we need to start batch work on Grammar.  I need to lay the ground work for Grammar with Latin.  The early Latin lessons include diagramming exercises and basic grammar.  I think the English grammar will make more sense once we do a bit more Latin.

This means I write out the list of subjects and make sure we have a weekly plan.  Right now, according to our plan, we will finish in July.

Lacie Update 1/8/20

Over the Break, Lacie finished Oliver Twist and did several Bible readings.  She worked on several exercises from WBE, too.  Just before Christmas, Lacie finished her time-line and history of the development of the Atomic Theory for Chemistry.  She made her fur mole over Break.

Yesterday, after Chemistry class, Lacie worked on a paper for Theology--several hours in all.  Okay, she took a brief bike ride after class, before lunch.  We spent about 30 minutes reviewing her class work she had completed.  Lacie made some notes for her History Midterm, too.

This morning, we spent an hour further organizing her Theology paper, Jesus Quotes Psalms.  We are using the WBE (a paperback edition) to write her Theology essay.  She is using the instructions for exercises in WBE to write her thesis, organize her notes, and draft the paper---all WBE topics.  (BTW, Lacie is working through WBE entirely before we begin the vocab and grammar.)  We spent less than an hour outlining her paper.  Lacie is writing her first draft for Tuesday.  Additionally, she is reading Fr. Laux and doing study questions.

Lacie finished Oliver Twist.  Over the weekend, she is listening to Oliver Twist on audio and doing the study guide question.  Here is our literature strategy.
1. Read the book.  Slog through the whole thing.  Don't be concerned with too many details.
2.  Listen to the audio book.
3.  Watch the Disney version of Oliver.
4.  Complete all of the study guide questions.
5. Write the essays.
6.  Take the Final Exam.

Presently, Lacie is creating History notes.  Next she will re-take all of the Chapter tests.  Finally, Lacie will take her Mid-term exam.  We spent some time talking about note-taking strategies, identifying the main points, looking at captions, etc.

After lunch is Algebra and Latin.  Tomorrow after Chemistry is more Algebra, History tests, and Latin.  Wish me luck.
