Learn the States

Paul, ten, is learning the names of the states by region.  Here is a site with maps and quizzes for each region.  The state abbreviations are easier to fit on to the dry erase labels; Paul is  learning the abbreviations at the same time.  Once he masters one region we proceed to the next.  From time to time, I put out two regions to label, to review.  It pays to do this activity daily—just like map facts.

Southeast Region

Paul, ten, is learning the names of the states.  We are using maps from  this packet.  I wrote the abbreviations for the states next to their names.  We’re using a dry erase board with dry erase labels.  Paul spends five-ten minutes labeling each region daily.  After five days, we quiz.  So far so good.

US States and Capitals

Paul, ten, fifth grade, is learning the names of the states, abbreviations, regions, and eventually the capitals.  Right now, we are working on the Southeast Region.  I printed copies of the blank maps for practice.

Interactive Whiteboard: States

Paul, ten, is learning about the states and capitals.  We’re using the whiteboard and dry erase labels for geography, along with maps of the regions I printed.  Paul can write the state’s name or abbreviation on the dry erase label to match on the map.  We are saving paper.  More importantly, we are doing several activities: learning the names of the states, the abbreviations, the locations of the states in each region, and the names of the regions.  Eventually, we’ll add the state capitols.  Take a look.

Interactive Whiteboard Animal Activity

Paul, ten, is studying vertebrate and invertebrate animals.  I decided to do a few extensions, beginning with Classifying Invertebrates.  This activity begins with an animal sort.  Surprise!  I modified the activity.  I instructed Paul to sort the animals into groups of animals, which he identified.  Before Christmas, I bought a magnetic white board and dry erase label magnets from Walmart. (Below is a screenshot with the names for the whiteboard and labels.). Next, Paul sorted the animals into vertebrates and invertebrates.  We switched the crab and iguana.  Finally, he did the classification activity with the second set of cards.  Did we need the whiteboard?  Not really.  But, I plan to do more sorting and labeling.  Right now the white board is a bit of a novelty.  Hey!  It made the three activities more fun.  Below are a few pix we’re adding to Paul’s portfolio.  I find hands-on activities reinforce and review lessons.  Hope this helps.
